India-Romania relations continue to exhibit exceptional warmth across diplomatic, media, and public dimensions, underpinned by a historical foundation of mutual trust and respect. Diplomatically, the recent State Visit of the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, to Romania from July 23-25, 2026, served as a significant landmark, marking the first such visit by an Indian Head of State in over three decades and underscoring a mutual commitment to deepening engagement. During the visit, both nations signed three crucial bilateral agreements in the fields of Science & Technology, Education, and Sports, aimed at fostering joint research, establishing an Indian Studies Chair at the University of Bucharest, and enhancing sports cooperation. Furthermore, Romania and India agreed to celebrate 2028 as the 'India-Romania Year of Innovation' to commemorate 80 years of diplomatic relations and set an ambitious target to double bilateral trade within the next three years. High-level discussions covered extensive cooperation across sectors such as IT, digital innovation, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, defence, AI, green hydrogen, and cyber diplomacy, with Romania also expressing its intention to join India's Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA). The absence of any public statements from Romania on India's internal matters, coupled with the consistent reiteration of India as an “important partner within the European Union,” reinforces the highly positive diplomatic sentiment.
